www.wellsreserve.org/news/2005-08-03_perseid.htmSHOOTING STARS GET ATTENTION AT WELLS RESERVEWELLS, MAINE - The Perseid meteor shower peaks soon. Come to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm on August 11 at 8 pm and let astronomer Scott Negley prepare you for this and other meteor showers throughout the year. Reservations are required at (207) 646-1555. The program fee is $2 for Laudholm Trust members and $4 for nonmembers. Negley will describe what causes meteor showers, when they happen, and how to get the best view of these sometimes spectacular celestial events. He will give special attention to the Perseid meteor shower, which occurs when Earth enters a debris cloud from Comet Swift-Tuttle. After his indoor talk, Negley will lead the group out to look for dust-sized "shooting stars" as they hit Earth's atmosphere. The Perseids peak on August 12, so sky watchers could see dozens of meteors per hour on August 11 with Scott Negley at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm. The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, with facilities at historic Laudholm Farm, is committed to investigating coastal environments and increasing understanding of their ecology. The reserve receives core funding from the nonprofit Laudholm Trust and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Wells Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road, just off Routes 1 and 9 near the Wells-Kennebunk line. For more information, visit www.wellsreserve.org. # # #
