EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS AT WELLS RESERVE APRIL 20 AND 21

WELLS, MAINE - Wells Reserve and Laudholm Trust celebrate Earth Day with art, music, crafts, games, and other activities at community gatherings on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21.

On Saturday, the Wells Reserve Earth Day Celebration will run from 10 am to 3 pm. The theme this year is coastal fish. The event is free.

Many special activities are planned. Make a fish print, look at fish scales through microscopes, see salt marsh fish, try your hand at Invent-a-Fish, make an Earth Day button, and play "Salinity Insanity" to learn about fish adaptations for living in a salt marsh.

As always, Earth Day at Wells Reserve will feature local conservation groups, businesses, schools, and other organizations offering hands-on activities and demonstrating what they do to make our planet a healthier place.

The Cover Crops, a fun folk-bluegrass band, will be back again this year to perform throughout the day. Borealis Breads will sell sandwiches, fish chowder, desserts, snacks, and juice. The Wells Reserve will supply free organic coffee and tea, so bring along your mug or buy one from us.

The 2007 Wells Reserve Earth Day Celebration is sponsored by Tourist News and Grandy Oats.

Laudholm Trust Reception for Artist James Dochtermann

On Friday, April 20 from 5 to 7 pm, Laudholm Trust will exhibit Art Out of the Estuary, a display of fish and coastal landscape paintings by James Dochtermann. The reception, part of Laudholm Trust's 25th anniversary celebration, will be held in Mather Auditorium at the Wells Reserve. Sponsors of the event include Bergen and Parkinson LLC, Consigli Construction, Digital Research, and Kennebunk Savings Bank. The Coastal Resource Library at Wells Reserve will hold an open house to coincide with the reception.

James Dochtermann is a scientist and artist currently working at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. As a scientist, he has investigated fish communities and habitats in estuaries, watersheds, and offshore areas of the Gulf of Maine. That research informs his artistry, where he uses oil and water-based paints to depict fishes and their habitats.

Dochtermann recently spent two years in northern Japan, where he compared and contrasted his knowledge of Maine's environment with the habitats and species of Tohoku. He produced artwork for several showings in Japan. His illustrations have also appeared in numerous documents and publications relating to the Gulf of Maine. James lives in Alfred with his wife Junko. His website is at www.JamesDochtermann.com.

Dochtermann's exhibit will continue for the Wells Reserve Earth Day Celebration on Saturday.
