MARINE MAMMAL REHAB TALK AT WELLS RESERVE

WELLS, MAINE - On Thursday, June 26 at 7 pm in Mather Auditorium, the Wells Reserve presents "Marine Animal Rehabilitation in Maine" with Keith Matassa, Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Coordinator at the University of New England. A suggested $5 donation includes site admission. Reservations are not needed. For more information, call 207-646-1555 or visit www.wellsreserve.org.

Matassa will provide a whirlwind tour of the UNE Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center, where stranded seals, whales, sea turtles, and other marine animals receive expert care. Matassa will describe the center's goals and its role in the national stranding network. He will also talk about some of the patients that have been brought in for care. It is harbor seal pupping season, so Matassa will highlight the seal rehabilitation process from entry through release.

The University of New England Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center is a state-of-the-art center for stranded marine animals. The center cares for four species of seals common to New England, four to five sea turtle species, and a few kinds of Cetaceans (porpoises, dolphins, and whales). The center rehabilitates animals rescued from 3400 miles of Maine coastline, plus it has programs for research, education and outreach, media and website, and fund-raising. The center also assists the Maine Department of Marine Resources with its rescue efforts. For more information about the center, its patients, and volunteer opportunities, please visit http://www.une.edu/cas/msc/marc/.
