The Wrack is the Wells Reserve blog, our collective logbook on the web.
The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Maines National Estuarine Research Reserve is a center for science, education, and conservation. For many people, this work leads to truth, wonder, and beauty.
But the recent, widespread, and justified protests over systemic racism in this country prove that, for too many people, for too many years, the paths to truth, wonder, and beauty are blocked. This systemic racism must stop, and we can do our small part to help stop it.
Laudholm Trust, the nonprofit partner of the Wells Reserve, commits to supporting and sustaining a safe and welcoming Wells Reserve for all races, colors, creeds, ages, abilities, and orientations. We will recruit more diverse members, volunteers, and staff to bring their perspectives to our work. We will partner with organizations working on social justice issues and access to nature for underrepresented peoples. With their assistance and guidance, we will develop more programs and opportunities for our regions minority audiences. Environmental issues are inseparable from social issues, and to achieve progress in one we must support progress in both.
As part of a national system, the Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a reserve for everyone. To work towards that more perfect end, we believe that we must continually rededicate ourselves to building a better place, a better country, and a better world. Pursuing the ideals of truth, wonder, and beauty, here and beyond our boundaries, demands nothing less.
Respectfully,
The Board of Trustees of Laudholm Trust
