This presentation will cover the taxonomy, evolution, breeding biology, and ecological significance of damselflies and dragonflies (Order Odonata). It will include images of some representative species of our nine odonate families, explore regional conservation issues, and briefly consider odonate population trends in the context of the 'insect apocalypse.’ The presentation will conclude with some recommended odonate identification field guides, apps, and websites.
About the Presenter
Dr. Ron Butler is an ecologist interested in issues related to the conservation of biological diversity. During his early career, Ron conducted research with seabirds in Maine, Newfoundland, and Antarctica. In the second half of his career, he changed his focus to ecologically important groups of insects in Maine. For the past 26 years, Ron has helped coordinate statewide community science initiatives focused on Maine's dragonflies, butterflies, bumble bees, and (presently) flower flies. He recently co-authored a book on the butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, and he has a similar book in press on damselflies and dragonflies of the region.
