A report evaluating the effectiveness of 12 stormwater treatments in protecting water quality and reducing runoff has just been released by the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology. The report is online here.
The research was done at the Stormwater Center's unique field site at the University of New Hampshire. It is designed to evaluate the performance of stormwater treatments side-by-side, under strictly controlled conditions. The site currently hosts three classes of treatments: manufactured devices such as underground infiltration units and hydrodynamic separators; traditional, structural approaches such as swales and ponds; and Low Impact Development designs such as a bioretention system and a gravel wetland.
The Wells NERR Coastal Training & Information Program is once again coordinating trips to the Stormwater Center. The next two are June 20 and September 21. FMI (207) 646-1555 ext 111.
